Annex Snapshots
In 2023 and 2024, the Annex of the California State Capitol was demolished to make way for a new building. Much of my career was spent in that Annex and I didn’t want to leave without preserving some of what I could. Over several days in 2022 and 2023, during my lunch break, I snuck into the Annex and snapped a few pictures with my cellphone camera.

Signage for closed Annex

Senate Side hallway of the Annex

Entrance door to the Secretary of the Senate's Office facing the third floor stairwell entrance. Two doors I walked through every day.

Members entrance to the Senate Chamber

Staircase to the third floor on the Senate side of the building. I took these stairs every day.

Senate Member directory. No idea why the TVs were still on in an unused building.

Assembly Member directory. Again, no idea why the TVs are still on.

Close up to the Chief Clerk's office door. The first office I worked in.

Member's entrance to the Assembly Chamber.

Member's Entrance only sign

Members only elevator.

Second floor of the Annex, looking out into the historic building rotunda

Second floor of the Annex. Murals were added several years ago. Some loved them. Some hated them. I LOVED them.

Just some funny signage leftover from COVID.

Entrance to the Press Room

Entrance to the Governor's Office...AKA the Horseshoe. The round spots on the floor are from the giant bear Gov. Schwarzenegger had installed when he was governor.

Entrance to the Assembly side stairwell. The tarped off area was the former entrance into the building and the entrance to the Lt. Governor's office.

An information kiosk.

A phone booth. It had been several years since they had phones. But they did.

A directory of offices.

An abandoned office with signage and equipment left over.

Shoe shine booth. Well used until the Annex closed.

Signage on the wall. Some directional and some commemorating the relationship of two staffers.
